Chapter 6

I watched silently as the cops made their way into my cousin’s house. I was sitting on the floor next to my boyfriend, wanting nothing more than to kill Adam myself. What the hell was he thinking? Acting like he needed to defend me. From what?! Ugh. I swear I could just strangle him right now. “Officer, look, they are friends that just got into an argument. Is this really necessary? “Chris was trying to persuade the cop to just leave. He wasn’t having much luck. “Looks like a little more was happening here than just a fight.” The cop sneered; obviously noticing Adam’s blood shot eyes and dilated pupils. I watched silently as Adam was handcuffed and, not so gently, seated into the back of a cop car. What I couldn’t stomach though, was what happened after that. When Chris turned around and finally closed the door, he shot me a look that made me shiver it was so cold. “When did you become such a bitch? The dude has been moping around for days because you just off and disappeared, and you call the cops on him!?” I flinched at the volume of his voice. “He didn’t seem to be so broken up to me.” I shot back, nodding to Adam’s room, where the two girls were hiding out until all the drama died down. That got me a very threatening looking glare. Spencer was awake by then, and stepping in front of me, much like he did before Adam attacked him. “Seriously dude? You just got your ass kicked, sit down.” Chris mocked. “No. I don’t care who the hell you are, you don’t talk to my girl like that.” Chris rolled his eyes at Spencer’s ‘heroics’ and just walked past us both. “I’m going to bail my friend out of jail. You better be gone before I get back.” He mumbled, grabbing his keys. “So that’s how it is. You’re choosing some ass hole you’ve been living with for a couple of months over your own cousin? You’re a bastard!” I yelled, as he was leaving his house. “You chose some asshole you knew for thirty minutes over me! You didn’t even have the damn decency to tell me you were leaving! Don’t talk to me about family loyalty right now. “ Chris shot back, slamming the door on his way out.

I quickly left after that, so angry that I was almost in tears. Spencer drove us back to his apartment, where I took a hot shower and made myself something to eat. i knew that Spencer wanted to talk but I was still too angry. Chris is the only family I have. He's the only person that has ever been there for me. And now he's mad at me because he's not happy with the decisions Im making in my life right now. "how's your face?" I asked Spencer as I climbed into bed. "It's fine. Head hurts like hell though." He replied from the bathroom. He soon climbed into bed with me and wrapped his arms around me, as I thought about Adam.

************************************************************************************

Adam did not look good the next morning. He wouldnt look at me and didnt have much to say. He was keeping to himself and was on the phone a lot. "Who are you talking to?" I asked. He looked up from his laptop. "Drew. We're trying to figure something out." He explained. I wanted to press on, but his face was turned back to the computer.

I tried to call Ari over the next couple of days. She wasnt answering her phone. It seemed like everyone turned moody and secretive. No one was speaking to anyone and it was becomming extremely frustrating. Drastic measures needed to be taken, I just had to figure out a way to make them listen to me, the voice of reason. :)

Chapter 5

Adam was tying to appear calm and cool, but it wasnt working to well. He narrowed his eyes at Ari. "Glad you had fun." He sad sarcastically. She held a frosty smile. "It was a lot of fun. And I see that you had fun also." She replied, nodding towards Leslie. " I dont think thats any of your buisness." He spat. "And Spencer is none of yours." Ari explained, pushing past him and into the living room. Spencer tried to follow but Adam grabbed his shoulder. "You Son of a Bitch!" He exclaimed and punched him in the face. Spencer reeled back and was met with blow after blow. "You just take her off to God knows where and do whatever the Hell you want with her?" I quickly grabbed Adam and pulled him off of Spencer. He was unconcious. "Shit." I mumbled, Suddenly there were red and blue lights flashing outsude. "Who called the cops?"I exclaimed, looking at Adam. His eyes were glossy and upon closer inspection it looked like he had done a lot more than drink. He smiled and me and fell against the wall. I looked over at Ari, who held her phone in her hand.

I couldn’t believe what was happening right now. It was like everything was moving in slow motion, and I had no control over it. And, I really don’t.

Chapter 4

3 days went by with no word from Ari. This was very unusual. Adam was pissed, although he was doing a very good job of not showing it. "Hey, Let's invite that girl you met over at Ari's the other night. What was her name? Kate?" Adam asked, opening another bottle of beer. I nodded. "Yeah, maybe she has some friends she can bring over." Adam laughed. "For seriously!"

So, I called Kate and she agreed to bring some friends and come over while Adam ran around the house, picking up bottles and other trash.

"Hey Chris!" Kate greeted about an hour later. I showed her inside. "I was afraid that you couldnt make it." I exclaimed. she laughed. "Are you kidding me? It was so boring at my house! And...I brought drinks!" She held up a bottle of vodka and a big bottle of rum. Holy crap. I had to remember to keep that away from Adam.

Turns out, it’s a lot harder to stop someone from drinking when you are pretty drunk yourself. We all were pretty far gone, and things were actually turning out really good. We kind of paired off, and I think Adam was making some pretty good progress with Kate’s friend, Leslie. I saw them head to Adam’s room out of the corner of my eye and smirked a little bit. “I’m glad they are getting along so well.” Kate said, smiling herself. “Yeah, my boy really needed a little pick me up.” I agreed. “Yeah. He’s not the only one.” She told me, and I figured that was as good a time as any to try and make a move. And it worked! And just when we were both starting to get into it, I heard my front door open. “Um, gross.” I heard Ari comment, and continue walking towards the kitchen. “Ari! What the hell!” I yelled, frustrated at her bad timing, and the fact that she’s been MIA for almost a week now. “What? We’re hungry.” She replied, like I was the one that should be in trouble right now. Wait… “We’re?” I asked, taking a better look around to see Spencer not too far behind her. “No. I don’t think so. Leave, now.” I demanded, shooting a nervous glance at Adam’s room. Ari just rolled her eyes at me and continued sifting through my fridge. “Where the hell have you been anyway?” I asked, as an afterthought. “New York.” “WHAT?! With… him? How? You didn’t even tell me!? .. Did you get me anything?” I could barely process all my thoughts. I was pissed at her, that’s for sure. “Yes, with Spencer. He invited me. I didn’t realized I needed your permission given the fact that I’m an adult. And nope, you get nothing.” Spencer moved over towards her now. It almost looked like he was being protective. I wasn’t really sure why, since I wasn’t snapping at her. Not yet. I’d yell at her for it later. It wasn’t until I saw Adam that I realized why Spencer was looking so defensive.

Chapter 3

Even though I said that Adam was only staying a few days, it ended up being permanent. Adam got a job at staples and was splitting the rent. I didnt mind though, we were really good friends in high school, and Ive always wondered what happened to him. I tried to ask him how everything has been for him, and so far, he has been avoiding the question. I'll get him though, and if I dont, I know Ari will.

Man, that girl is a pistol. Shes 18 years old, fresh out of high school. She lives with her friend, Maggie...who I think is a cokehead. Ari is not afraid to speak her mind though, once you get her angry, her emerald green eyes will glare and her strawberry blonde hair will look firery...you will want to run away.

But when shes in a good mood she is perfectly plesant. She has been coming over every day and just hanging with us.

"So, I am having a party." Ari announced one day, her mouth full of oreo. I raised an eyebrow. "Oh yeah, says who?" "Says me. Its a big day for me tomarrow." She replied, polishing off her milk and flopping onto the couch. "Yeah, whats tomarrow?" Adam asked, walking into the living room, towel drying his hair. I saw Ari blush a little. "It's my birthday! And Mags and I are going to have a party Friday." She told him. Adam grinned. "Sounds cool. We'll be there, right Chris?" "What No! Chris cant come!" Ari exclaimed. Adam laughed while I narrowed my eyes. "Gee thanks" I said, sarcastically. "Well, I just dont think you will like it very much." Ari explained, a bit patheticly. (I have no idea if thats even a word lol)

That just made Adam laugh harder. "Dude, your cousin thinks you're a square." He said, claping his hand onto my shoulder. "I'm coming." I told her. Ari shrugged her shoulders, there were some arguments that just wern't even worth trying. "Fine. But just dont be suprised by what you see."

When we all finally got there, I must say it wasn't at all what I was expecting. Ari kind of made it seem like this was going to be a crazy party, but there weren't more than 6 cars there. I smelled the pot before we even got to the door. "Ready to party bro?" Adam asked me, looking a little skeptical about the whole thing. I just shrugged and walked in, my lungs immeadiately regretting the decision. Ari was sitting in the cornor looking pretty sulky. Adam made a b-line to her, which i expected. I look a look around, examining the croud. There were only about two people there, besides us that didn't look like complete burn outs. I made my way over to them, a guy and a girl, deciding to just make the most of this and have fun.

Within ten minutes I was two beers in and helping them finish off the newest joint. I was kind of surpised to see Ari take a couple hits. Even more surprised that Adam passed. This party was finally starting to look up though. I was having a blast, and the girl to my left, who i learned was Katelyn, wasn't too bad to look at either. "Man, I gotta be honest, this party is pretty lame." Katelyn remarked, glancing at me through the cornor of her eye. "I know. I blame Ari! We are way too cool for this party, i think." I replied, shooting a wink her way. "Oh shut up. It's Mags party, not mine!" Ari huffed. I saw the guy, Spencer, move his hand onto Ari's leg. I frowned but ignored it. Adam wasn't as graceful about hiding his dislike though. He was on complete defensive, arms crossed, hard stare. Yup, this night was going to be very interesting. "Well, you will just have to have another party to show her how it's done." Spencer replied. "Yeah yeah, blah blah. Pass the joint." Katelyn said. Magie suddenly jumped up, and started dancing her little heart out. It was actually a little disturbing. "This is the greeeeatest song! Spence come dance with me!" She practically demanded of him. He looked a little discusted and just shook his head. "This song is so mediocore it's painful." Uh oh. Breathe Carolina was playing. If I remember correctly, Adam loved them. I heard a gasp and sat back, getting comfortable to enjoy the show. "Are you KIDDING me?! They are the best band ever!! It's so unique!" Adam said. Spencer scoffed. "Really? Best band ever? Nirvana. Beatles. Rolling Stones. The Who. The Ramones. Those are bands. They revolutionalized music! They were real musicians. Breathe Carolina. All they are is noise and computers." Spencer shot back. "What?! Ok, I'm not saying those aren't good bands. Everyone knows that they liad the foundation for music today. But Breathe Carolina took it to the next level. They used all the technological advances to their advantage and made something amazing out of it! Saying that makes them less of a musicial is like saying the Jimmy sucks because he uses distortion! It's just ridiculous!" Adam was getting louder now. "You know, that just shows how commercial you are. If you can honestly say that they are good music, then you have no taste. You are just happy with mediocrity and can't appreciate the classics, REAL music, then you are just another drone." I shot up at that, seeing Adam about to do the same. "Great party guys, gotta go. Comeon buddy." I speedily said, and with a lot of difficuly got Adam out of there. I took one last glance at Spencer, and he still had that arogant look on his face. Tool.

Adam stayed quiet as He got into the car. But once I sped out of the driveway, all Hell broke loose.

"What an ass!" Adam started, while searching for a song on the radio. "He has NO Idea what he is even talking about! That guy is an idiot! 'You must be another media drone if you like Breathe carolina.' Oh, I'm sorry I like them...and they're not like 50 years old. Next time I'm searching for something on the radio, I'll make sure to go to the oldies station first!" I laughed at that one. "Yeah, he was kind of a jerk." I stated. Adam stared at me. "Kind of!?!? Are you freaking kidding me? He was a Total jerk! I swear, I will kill him if I ever see his ugly face again!"

When we got home, Adam was still on a rampage. But, I left him alone and went into the bathroom to take a shower. and then headed to bed.

Chapter 2

I was dragging my feet across the pavement, wanting to just fall asleep right where I was standing. My cousin’s house was just such a closer walk from work than my house is, and he usually doesn’t mind if I crash there for a little after work. I finally reached his door, after what seemed like hours, when in reality it was only four blocks. I opened the door and with my eyes half closed started making the very familiar rout to his couch. Only, there was an unexpected obstacle in my way, and instead, I just landed on my butt. I took that time to just crawl in a ball, deciding the floor was comfy enough for now. “Chris! What the hell?” I half grumbled, half yelled. “Ouch…” I heard and unfamiliar deep voice say. I cracked one eye open, afraid I may have walked into the wrong house. Same furniture. Same layout. So.. who the hell is this? “Chris!!” I screamed, now more awake than I had been all day. “Calm down Ari. That’s Adam. He’s gonna be crashin here for a little bit.” Chris told me, not amused with my antics today. He must’ve had a really slow day. Chris walked back into his room, where he was doing God knows what, leaving me alone with this stranger. I took that time to observe him. He looked to be pretty tall, though I couldn’t tell how tall since he was sitting on the couch now. His hair was a chestnut color, and extremely messy. Bright blue eyes, still glazed over with sleep. He had a very strong jaw line, and a smile playing at his lips. “Are you just gonna sit there staring at me?” He asked, his smile growing wider. I simply shushed him, and made myself comfortable on the floor, finally getting the nap I’ve been thinking about all day.

"Well, you can sleep on the couch." Adam offered. I opened up an eye. "Ugh, no thanks. I have found a comfy spot." I said, kicking off my shoes and laying my head on the floor. I couldnt help but peeking at Adam. He was laying on the couch, watching tv. He caught me staring at him. Crap. He grinned. "C'mon Ari." He said. "I feel really bad, watching you attempt to sleep on the floor." He got up and motioned for me to join him. I sighed and climbed onto the couch. We watched tv for a bit, not saying anything, before Chris came back out into the living room. "So, How was work Ari?" He asked while texting someone on his phone. "Eh, not too bad today. I wish I wasnt going back tomorrow though. "Where do you work?" Adam asked. "The diner. Dont eat there, its so disgusting." Adam laughed, "Well, thanks for the heads up." He said, still having a playful smirk on his face. Chris looke up from his phone. "So, whats up man? How have you been?" He asked Adam curiously. I saw Adam shift uncomfortably on the couch. He avoided Chris eyes as he smiled, "Oh, nothing. I just figured it was time to leave." He said, playfully shrugging his shoulders and focusing his eyes back onto the tv.

Chapter 1

I hate my job. I really hate it. I work in this tiny little booth in the middly of the mall, selling phones to children who should probably be in school. I hate it when they come up to look at the phones and attempt to slide it into their pockets. Uh, yeah man, we do fasten the phones onto the stand. You dont think you're the first moron to do that, are you?

It's a slow day today, so I am sitting, playing with one of the phones on the stand. I look over and see someone standing at the counter, looking like they needed help. I roll my eyes. I am so ready for my break. But, I reluctantly go over there. "Can I help you?" I ask, in that special tone of voice for people that are bothering me. The guy nods, and I recognize him. It was my friend, Adam, from high school.

He looked terrible. His skin was pale and sallow. His eyes were bloodshot and there were deep bags. It looked like he hasnt shaved in days. "Hey Adam!" I greeted, trying not to let hom see how shocked I was by his appearence. He attempted to smile and pulled his duffel bag closer to him. "Hey Chris, havent seen you in awhile. What are you up to?" I shrugged, "Working. It sucks." Adam let out a laugh. "Yeah, looks like it." I shifted my balance to the other foot, and an awkward moment passed. "So, I have a huge favor to ask." Adam began. I looked at him, already knowing what he was going to ask me. "Well, I know this is kind of weird, I mean, we havent talked in a long time, and Im really sorry about that. It's jus-" "Dude, look. I know you. Yes. You can crash at my place." Adam smiled gratefully. I turned around and went to go sit back down, but Adam was still standing there. "What?" I asked, cocking my head to one side. "Well, I've been on the bus for awhile, and I'm just kind of tired." I looked at him. He looked kind of pitiful really, just standing there, with no place to go. I sighed, heavily. "Ok fine. Here's the key. I will be home at 5. Please don't burn the place down." Adam let out a small smile, as I scribbled down some directions on an old reciept.

I was a little uncomfortable, letting Adam have my keys and stuff. I mean, he is my friend, but, i havent seen him in a few years. I came home and found my door unlocked. 'Great.' I mumbled. 'I feel like i'm going to be murdered in my own home.' I walked in and saw adam fast asleep on my couch. He looked a little better, he had showered and shaved, and he looked less...worried. I was on my way to the kitchen, to make myself something to eat, when I stupidly stubbed my toe on a chair. "Ow. Crap. Crap.Crap!" i yelled, hobbling around. I heard a groan and saw that I had woken Adam up.

Prolouge

Eighteen is usually the time that most young people are just starting our their lives. You can hear it everywhere. That buzz of excitement. The thrills of going away to start college, or even just to take a year off and find out who you are going to be.

These are options that Adam Rivers didnt even have the chance to consider. Instead, he was shoved onto the first bus out of town with whatever clothes he was able to throw into a duffle bag and twenty bucks in his pocket.
